We welcome the European Commission’s (EC) communication on “Innovating for Sustainable Growth: a Bioeconomy for Europe”, aiming to shift the European economy towards greater and more sustainable use of renewable resources.

The strategy recognises packaging’s significant role in ensuring food safety, enhancing shelf-life, preserving taste, protecting goods, providing information to consumers and providing convenient portion sizes.

It’s a simple, but very shocking fact: in the EU, the amount of food wasted per person each year amounts to 179 kg, as European Environment Commissioner Janez Poto?nik explained at the Combating Food Waste in the EU event that took place in Brussels in November 2011.

Some would argue that ‘sustainability’ is an overused word, attached to all manner of topics and industries. But during the International Week of Forests, the message that Europe’s forests are truly sustainable and are being well maintained by the forest-based industries was somewhat of a surprise to journalists and MEPs present.

Forest EventEarly last month, for three days, the tree-lined corridors of the European Parliament became the backdrop to an exhibition and workshop entitled ‘Forest Sectors’ contribution to the EU bio-economy’.

Hosted by MEPs Riikka Manner, Luis Manuel Capoulas Santos and Gaston Franco the event was in recognition of the International Year of Forests 2011.
