Corrugated cribs – why the Fins grow up loving corrugated

In Finland, seventy-five years ago, the state started to give maternity packs to all parents of new-born babies: each pack is a cardboard box containing clothes, useful products, bed linen and a small mattress. The box itself also doubles as a crib.

Amazingly, this story, which was first published in 2013 by the BBC, has collected 10 million shares in the past 20 months. Why should that be? Maybe it’s because the maternity pack is a recognition of the importance of good parenting. But this is also a story about equality: babies from all social backgrounds sleep securely within the box’s four corrugated walls.
